Day #210 – St. Bernardus Abt 12

July 30, 2011

Great, great beer for today! In fact this is probably one of my favorite beers of all time. So pay attention!

St. Bernardus Abt 12

St. Bernard is a brewery in Belgium. (yes I realize I left off the ‘us’). It is not an abbey like some might believe and therefore cannot be a true Trappist Ale, but this is certainly a great beer.

This beer is classified as an Abt. This is the name that was given to describe high in alcohol abbey ales. This is very similar to a Quadrupel but quads are a little lighter in character. This particular beer fits right into the Abt category at 10.5%.

Pours a very murky maroon brownish color that cannot be seen through. It has a beige type bubbly head.

Aroma is super dark fruits. Lovely notes of grape, cherries and dates. Slight woody notes, but mainly sweet.

Flavor is superb! Lovely notes of big time grape juice, sugar, Belgian fruit and cherries. This finishes like it started which is amazing. One of the best beers on the market; no doubt.
