Day #74 – Kirin Ichiban

March 16, 2011

I’m sure by now you have all been aware of the massive earthquake that hit Japan last week.  Tokyo was also affected by the quake and the subsequent tsunami wave that caused great destruction in it’s path.  While this area is prone to earthquakes and their buildings and structures have been reinforced to handle this, an earthquake of this magnitude was just too much for several structures.  Unfortunately the beer community was affected by this as well.  Kirin Brewing Company is based in Tokyo and has a nation wide distribution area.  They released a statement a few days ago describing the damage to their facility.  Here is a photo:  you can see the massive fermentation tanks that were knocked over like bowling pins.  Unreal.

Keep in mind these tanks are several stories tall and they have suffered damage.  Hopefully Kirin will be back on it’s feet and brewing again soon!  In honor of them, I have chosen my beer 74 to be from this brewery.

Kirin Ichiban

The Ichiban is their flagship beer and unfortunately is a pale lager.  Not my favorite style but somehow I keep running into these things.  In honor of the brewery however I will come at this with an open mind.  Here’s hoping for the best!

I decided to pour this beer into a glass from another brewery in Tokyo, Sapporo.

This beer pours a clear golden yellow color with a very fizzy white head.  Looks fairly standard and straightforward.

Right off the bat the aroma is very corny and metallic.  Lots of grain and cornbread.  I could smell it before I even got close to the glass.

The flavor is bitter grain, soured bread and metallic notes.  Distasteful finish which is very bitter indeed.  Not good.

I wish the Kirin family all the best and hope for a speedy recovery, but I will not be purchasing this again.

Cheers!
